The idea that meditating improves cognitive performance is one of those that meet the most skepticism, and the most misplaced enthusiasm. The reality is more precise than either camp: meditation won't make you a faster calculator, but it profoundly changes what you do with the cognitive resources you already have.
For a chess player, this is a distinction that can be worth dozens of Elo points.
What Meditation Actually Trains
Before examining the effects on chess, we need to understand what meditation trains. The word covers several distinct practices that engage different brain circuits:
Focused attention (focused attention meditation). Concentration practice on a single object: usually the breath. Each time attention drifts, you bring it back, without judgment, to the object. This is direct training of the attentional "muscle."
Open monitoring (open monitoring). Practice of observing thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations as they arise, without identifying with them or judging them. Trains metacognition: awareness of one's own mental states.
Loving-kindness meditation (loving-kindness). Deliberate cultivation of positive emotions toward oneself and others. Different effects, more useful for emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships.
For chess, the first two are the most directly relevant.
The Neuroscientific Evidence: What Meditation Changes in the Brain
Lazar (2005): Thicker Gray Matter
Sara Lazar (Harvard Medical School) published in 2005 in NeuroReport the first structural MRI study comparing regular meditators (>9 years of practice) and non-meditators. Results: meditators have a thicker prefrontal cortex and right insular cortex.
This is not an intervention study (so no proven causality), but it is the first solid signal that regular meditation practice is associated with measurable structural changes: not just a temporary mental state.
Holzel (2011): 8 Weeks Is Enough
The most methodologically convincing study is by Britta Holzel and colleagues (2011, Psychiatry Research). Intervention design: 16 participants followed an 8-week MBSR program (20 min/day), with MRI before and after. Matched control group.
Results: significant increase in gray matter density in the left hippocampus (memory), posterior cingulate cortex, temporoparietal junction, and cerebellum. Reduction in the right amygdala (emotional reactivity) among participants who reported the greatest stress reduction.
This is an important result: 8 weeks is short. The brain plasticity observed in healthy adults in such a short time is exceptional.
Brewer (2011): Less Mind Wandering
Judson Brewer (Yale) published in 2011 in PNAS an fMRI study comparing expert meditators (>10,000 hours of practice) and novices. Results: expert meditators show a 22% reduction in Default Mode Network (DMN) activations: precisely the network involved in daydreaming, rumination, and mental wandering.
For a chess player, this is the most directly actionable effect. If the mind wanders 46.9% of the time on average (Killingsworth & Gilbert, 2010), reducing this percentage during a 4-hour classical game represents an enormous attentional gain: potentially more important than any short-term technical improvement.
Mind Wandering in Chess: A Hidden Cost
Consider a 4-hour classical game. At 47% mind wandering, your brain spends approximately 1 hour and 53 minutes in a distracted state, even if you are physically present at the board. These moments include:
- Thinking about what you'll eat after the game
- Mentally replaying the last blunder
- Anticipating the disappointment of a loss
- Mentally checking the standings and their implications
- Revisiting conversations or situations from the day before
None of these moments help you find the right move. Most actively harm you by consuming cognitive resources without contributing to the position in front of you.
Meditation does not eliminate these thoughts: it develops the ability to notice them quickly and return to the task. The difference is not quantitative (having fewer parasitic thoughts) but qualitative (returning quickly when they occur).
Emotional Regulation After a Blunder
One of the most useful effects of meditation for chess players is post-error emotional recovery.
Studies by Richard Davidson (University of Wisconsin) on left/right prefrontal asymmetry show that meditators have an activation ratio favoring the left prefrontal cortex: associated with positive affect and emotional flexibility. Concretely: after a stressful event (social stress test, exposure to negative images), meditators return to their baseline state faster than non-meditators.
In chess, the blunder is the typical stressful event. The ability to process it quickly and return to the objective position (without rumination) is a skill directly trainable through meditation.
Daniel Goleman and Richard Davidson synthesized these results in Altered Traits (2017), distinguishing:
- State effects: temporary changes during or immediately after a meditation session
- Trait effects: lasting changes that persist beyond the practice, after several months of training
For chess, state effects are useful (10 minutes before a game) but trait effects are decisive: they transform the player's overall relationship to competitive pressure.
How to Integrate a Meditation Practice
The standard MBSR protocol (Kabat-Zinn, 1990) is scientifically validated and accessible: 20 minutes per day, 6 days per week, for 8 weeks.
For a chess player just starting, a gentler progression is possible:
Weeks 1-2: 5-10 minutes per day of focused attention meditation. Focus on the breath. When attention drifts, gently return to the breath. No judgment, no goal other than noticing the drift and returning.
Weeks 3-4: 10-15 minutes per day. Introduce 5 minutes of open monitoring (observing passing thoughts without attaching to them).
Weeks 5-8: 15-20 minutes per day. Combine both practices according to the day's feel.
Before an important game: 5-10 minutes of focused meditation, about 30-60 minutes before the start. Not right before: allow time for the transition.
Useful apps: Calm, Headspace, Waking Up (Sam Harris, more academic). Guided voice helps enormously at the beginning.
What Meditation Will Not Do
Important honesty: meditation is not a magic potion for chess. Here is what it will not do:
It will not make you calculate more variations. Raw calculation capacity depends on working memory, tactical experience, and familiarity with the position type. Meditation does not directly affect these variables.
It will not replace chess training. A regular meditator who does not work on openings and tactics will not improve their Elo.
It will not eliminate the disappointment of a defeat. The goal is not the absence of emotion: it is better management of emotion. You will still feel frustration; you will spend less time stuck in it.
It will not be immediate. The first weeks are often uncomfortable: the mind rebels, the urge to "do something useful" during the 20 minutes, persistent skepticism. These resistances are normal and part of the practice.
The Scientific Verdict
Meditation is one of the most solidly documented performance psychology interventions. Meta-analyses (Goyal et al., 2014, JAMA Internal Medicine) show clinically significant effects on anxiety, depression, and pain, with effect sizes comparable to certain psychotropic medications for moderate conditions.
For cognitive performance (attention, working memory, emotional regulation), effects are also documented, moderate but robust (Sedlmeier et al., 2012, Psychological Bulletin, meta-analysis of 163 studies).
For chess specifically, few studies exist yet. But the mechanisms: DMN reduction, improved sustained attention, better emotional regulation: are precisely the factors that limit chess performance beyond technical knowledge.
It is one of the rare interventions where the cost-benefit ratio is extremely favorable: 20 minutes per day for 8 weeks, free, with no side effects, and potentially transformative for a player who plateaus for mental rather than technical reasons.
