This question regularly comes up in clubs and parent forums. It rests on a widespread intuition: chess is an intellectually demanding game, gifted children need intense intellectual stimulation, so the two go together naturally.

The intuition isn't false. But it simplifies a richer, more nuanced reality.

What Is a Gifted Child?

The term gifted (or "high intellectual potential," HPI in French) designates people whose IQ exceeds a conventional threshold, most often IQ > 130, the top 2.3% of the distribution.

This statistical definition hides a complex psychological reality. Gifted children aren't simply "more intelligent" on all levels. French psychologist Jean-Charles Terrassier described the concept of dyssynchrony: a gifted child's intellectual development often exceeds their affective and motor development.

The popular intuition ("gifted people are naturally better at chess") deserves to be confronted with the data.

Calibrate competition intensity. Start with small local tournaments, with attentive follow-up of the child's emotional reaction.

Maintain other activities. Chess shouldn't become the unique space of accomplishment and recognition.

Stay alert to overload signals. Gifted children often invest 100% in their interests. If the child shows signs of exhaustion, anxiety before games, or disgust for the game, that's a signal to take seriously.
